The summer of 1938 was the final full year of competition before the outbreak of the Second World War. The year saw a highly competitive County Championship alongside a dramatic and high-scoring Ashes series. In the Championship, Yorkshire asserted themselves once more as champions, their side packed with England stalwarts such as Len Hutton, Maurice Leyland, and the left-arm genius Hedley Verity. Lancashire and Middlesex pushed hard in pursuit, while outstanding individual performances came from stars like Wally Hammond (Gloucestershire), Bill Edrich (Middlesex) and Denis Compton (Middlesex).
