ODI - Series - 1975 - World Cup
This is the one that started it all - the first One Day International World Cup. By today's standards it was a modest little competition of eight nations ... actually, seven nations and East Africa. It was done and dusted in ultra quick time with the first round kicking off on Saturday, June 7 and the Final on June 21, 1975.
The squads were small, the weather was good, the crowds large and enthusiastic and the cricket was scintillating. The squads contained a who's who of cricketing legends, including Lillee, Walker, Bedi, Greig, Underwood, Hadlee, Gavaskar (who played each match as if it was a Timeless Test), Khan and of course Lloyd.
After three matches each across two Group and two semi-finals, the West Indies emerged triumphant against a battling Australia in the Final at Lord's.
